MMEA All State Auditions

All submission recordings must be submitted by the directors. Each school must pay for the submissions at this link All State Audition Fee Payment Form 2021 or the submissions will not be adjudicated.



        Recorded Audition Submissions Instructions for Submittable

A. Vocal Auditions

        

      Vocal Recording InstructionsIf using a stand, be sure it is not blocking the camera from viewing the
        student’s face and torso.

  1.  Set up your recording area with a device to play the accompaniment and a different
            device to video record your audition. 
  2. Test your recording to be sure that you have a good mixture of your singing and the accompaniment before actually starting your video submissions. 
  3. Video record your student standing so that the adjudicator can see him
  4.  Do not sing directly into the camera.

 We have set this up with three different uploads so you will be able to change the taped accompaniment for each submission. You must submit three

  •  One for the Art song
  •  One for the Choral Song
  •   One for the scale

  Make sure you are singing the correct audition material provided by the MMEA. All the Vocal Materials and information is on the MMEA website https://mainemmea.org/


         Upload 1 - The Art Song

  1. State your name and what voice part you are auditioning for. 
  2. . Art Song from 24 Italian Songs and Arias
  3. Announce the name of the required audition selection,
  4. Start the accompaniment and sing the solo.

          Upload 2 - The Choral Song

                    Choral Assessment -

  1. Announce the name of the required selection and what part you will be
            singing.
  2. Start the accompaniment (Part Missing – so you can perform the part
            independently) and sing your part with the accompaniment. If you use
            the recording with their voice part you will not be scored.

            Upload 3 - The Scale

  1. Scales must be memorized (no music stand)
  2. Start the chord progression recording for your voice range and sing the scale.


B. Wind Instruments

        Instrumental Recording Instructions

  1.  Video record your student sitting or standing so that the adjudicator can see them playing their instrument.
  2.   Do not play directly into the camera.
  3. Adjust their stand so that it is not blocking the camera from filming their
            fingerings or slide technique.
  4. Make sure you are playing the correct audition material provided on the MMEA

  5. Have the student state their name and what instrument they are auditioning on.
            
    You will be submitting three separate video submissions Upload #1. Your Scales. Upload # 2. The Lyric Etude Upload #3. The Technical Etude
            


      Upload #1. Scales  

  1. All Scales must be memorized. Turn their music stand to face away from them and towards the camera so the adjudicator can see that you are not reading the scales.
  2. Announce each scale before your play
  3. Scale requirements - refer to the MMEA website for ranges and octaves (Do Not
            Play Concert Scales!)
  4. Play your Ab Major Scale
  5. Play your D Major Scale
  6. Play your Chromatic Scale


          Upload #2. Lyric Etude

  1. Announce the name of the required lyric etude before starting.


           Upload #3. Technical Etude

  1. Announce the name of the technical etude before starting.
  2. *If you are Auditioning for Piccolo you must do two auditions, one for Flute and one for Piccolo


C. Percussion Auditions

                Percussion Recording Instructions

  1.  You may set up the percussion for the Tanner before recording - however you must untune the timpani before starting so the adjudicators can see and hear the student tuning the timpani as part of the audition .
  2. Set up so the camera can view the whole percussion section or have someone follow you as you perform the Tanner.
  3.  Please double check with the MMEA website to verify that you are performing the correct audition material. https://mainemmea.org/
            
    For Snare Drum and Timpani you will be submitting two separate video submissions ;

    For Mallets you will be submitting three separate video submissions ;

Upload #1. Tanner Multiple Percussion Solo

  1. State your name and what instrument you are auditioning for
  2. Tune the Timpani
  3. When tuned and ready - Announce the Tanner Solo
  4. Perform the audition solo

Upload #2 .   Solo Audition Etudes by Garwood Whaley

  1. Change to your solo instrument ( Snare Drum, Mallets, or Timpani) and make sure the video will capture your performance
  2. Start the Video - If you are auditioning on Timpani - Start the video and record yourself tuning the Timpani for the solo.
  3. Announce and perform the Whaley Audition Solo

Upload #3.  f you are auditioning for Mallets, Your Scales

  1.  Announce and Play the - Ab Major Scale 
  2.  Announce and Play the - D Major Scale 
  3. Announce and Play the Chromatic Scale


If you are doing multiple percussion auditions (for example auditioning for snare drum and timpani) You must submit two separate submissions. You can use the same Tanner recording for both. Be sure you state this when you list if you are doing multiple auditions.


Strings Auditions

             Strings Recording Instructions

       GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

  1.  Video record your student sitting or standing so that the adjudicator can see them playing their instrument.
  2.   Violin/Viola: The student should turn 90 degrees from the camera so that their bow arm and right hand fingers are both clearly visible. Make sure that the music stand is not blocking the view of the player.
  3. Cello/Bass: Face the camera. Adjust the stand so that it is not blocking the camera from filming their finger and bow technique.
  4.  Make sure the student is playing the correct audition material provided on the MMEA website. https://mainemmea.org/
  5. While there is no formal dress code for auditions, please encourage students to treat this like an interview where appearance matters. The clothing should not distract from the performance.

  You will be making three video uploads - Upload #1: Scales, Upload #2:  Solo,  Upload 3: Excerpts

          Upload #1: Scales

  1.  The student should first announce their name (first and last) and instrument.
  2. Announce each scale before playing.
  3.  All Scales must be memorized. Turn the music stand to face
            away from the player and towards the camera so the adjudicator
            can see that they are not reading the scales.

                ●  Scale requirements 2021-2022:

  •   Violin - C Major Scale, 3 octaves; a melodic minor scale, 3 octaves
    •  Viola and Cello - F Major Scale, 3 octaves; d melodic minor scale, 3 octaves
    •  Bass - F Major Scale, 2 octaves; g melodic minor scale, 2 octaves


           Upload #2. Solo

  • Announce the required solo from the MMEA website before starting.
  •   Make sure that the player’s hands (bow and fingers) are clearly in the shot.

           Upload #3: Excerpts

  •  Announce the excerpt provided on the MMEA website.
  •   Make sure that the player’s hands (bow and fingers) are clearly in the shot.
